Simply Awesome

The Best English-Spanish Dictionary in the Store.

Decent dictionary but needs more features for the money and interface is lacking

The dictionary is excellent and provides real-world examples. However, the content of the dictionary is about the only thing good I can say about this product. For $25, it should include a flash card mode and some Spanish learning games - the portable electronic Franklin translators are only a bit more and include all this! When a definition is looked up, you can choose to follow the links to a definition for a new word, a conjugation, or look it up in Google. Great, but this is only for the target language. Did it not occur to you that one might want to look up a word or a phrase from the source language too? This is a no-brainer. The interface overall is clumsy, there is no landscape mode, when you switch from Dictionary to Conjugate or vice versa it does not automatically carry the word. For $25?!?!? Come on people. Hopefully ultralingua will take this feedback and provide some free updates for those of us who threw down the cash.

Excellent!! The best Spanish-English Translation/Dictionary application!!

I bit the 24.99 bullet and bought this application (after trying a lot of the free and lower cost ones). I usually dont write reviews, but this application is by far the best Spanish-English translation dictionary. I own a Franklin device and this application blows it out of the water. The dictionary/translator returns more than a basic translation, but often times, many examples and compound phrases. I love the fact that you can conjugate verbs, translate ANY number using a calculator-type interface, and highlight any word from the result of a translation and further translate, conjugate, and/or google. You will not regret this purchase. My only negative comment: I understand the fact that English is from England and Spanish is from Spain, but these languages are spoken in other countries. The icon for the application isnt completely accurate. Nevertheless, I created my own icon and changed it on my iPhone. :P

Very Cool

I purchased a lot of translators and this is one of the very best I have ever seen!

best 25 bucks i ever spent

i love this thing, it is the most useful app on my ipod touch. well worth the money due to all of it´s functions and features. also, you don´t have be connected to the internet which is a serious plus.

Like the looks a lot, but worry about accuracy

Not too reassuring...conjugation for freir has freido instead of frito...how many other errors lurking?

overpriced

It works fine but its a bit pricey for a dictionary. It should be around $10.

Very happy with this product

Tried Spanish Anywhere first, but quickly ran into words that werent included in that dictionary. This one is comprehensive - I havent stumped it yet. I like the history feature to review words youve previously looked up, but a bookmark feature would be better as it gives the user more control. An integrated flashcard feature for memorizing the words youve looked up would be hugely useful and would really set this apart from paper dictionaries.

Very nice

Looks very good so far. The ability to search for a conjugated verb and find the matching infinitive is great (especially for irregular verbs). If it automatically took you to the correct tense page when you tapped on the entry, it would be even better!

no audio pronunciation ????

I paid almost $25 and no audio pronunciation, that is very bad, So what this app. has different from the other that make it too expensive??ahhh is just because is from Ultralingua :-(

A tremendous disappointment

If I had the time, I would make a list of all the words this dictionary doesnt include. Its practically useless. Dont buy it! I wouldnt download it again even if it were free.

Why is it called "Pro?"

Unfortunately, this dictionary really cannot be called "Pro." One would think that "Pro" means "for the non-novice" or "for those seeking additional definitions for less common words." This dictionary, however, is geared toward beginning students and should market itself as such. For example, upon download, I immediately attempted to find some words I had recently come across -- to no avail. "Mordiente" -- no entry found. "Verdín" -- no entry found. While these are not words that basic students need to know, a "Pro" dictionary should be exactly that -- more advanced, with a wider range of vocabulary and an eye toward words a student of Spanish will encounter as his or her studies progress.

previous reviewer mistaken

This dictionary is excellent. Not only is casa there (with 9 entries defining it) but so are many other words. I am having a problem with the conjugation function, but that may just be my phone. The previous reviewer who said that even basic words could not be found was not using the dictionary very well.

Bad Program

Poor program cross reference slow and problematic

Look elsewhere

If youre looking for a travel translator, this is not the program youre looking for. The verb conjugator has some utility, but certainly doesnt justify the purchase price.

Great!

I really dont know what all the complaints are about. I am fluent in Spanish and this dictionary is very very useful! Maybe the complainers arent using it correctly? We traveled to Ecuador with this dictionary. It was great because I had turned off the Internet and phone to avoid the expensive roaming charges and since this dictionary is downloaded, I could still use it! Had all the unusual words I was looking for in Quito and the Galapagos and CONJUGATED them too. Use it also when I volunteer in a Spanish speaking medical clinic (as an MD). This app IS worth the big bucks because it doesnt need wifi or 3G to use it.

Incredibly buggy

Incredibly buggy. It regularly loses functionality. You may click to switch from an english search to a spanish search but nothing appears to happen. The system may have changed what is being searched but the display doesnt update. I have also had the conjugation section lock on one verb for the past tense. I look up any verb and it goes to present tense fine but when I select past tense it reverts to a verb from an hour ago. Would not stop until I exited and re-entered the program. I use it a lot but I have to quit and reopen several times a day due to bugs. The bottom line: Way to pricy for how poorly it functions.

Needs some work, good potential

Update: Lately, the biggest annoyance is that the app always opens to the last entry or screen it was in when last closed. This would be much better as an option. It would make tons of sense to also have the option to have the app open to a blank search screen, ready to type in a word. It is extreeeeemely tedious when going back and forth between another app and this one to always have to wait for the app to open to its last state and then navigate to the search screen and then clear and then enter.... Most often dictionaries are opened to quickly look up a new or different word. Besides, the history screen does a pretty good job of recording the last entry viewed, and so on. --------------- History list is less buggy, but after a while, I still get duplicated entries on occasion, and sometimes random entries will not display the translation direction, but will again at a later time. Hey, how about manual bookmarking like other Ultralingua language apps Ive seen in the app store? Theres another star right there. ------------ OK, so Ive discovered it IS possible to use text copy with the content. You have to tap and hold (and drag to position) from blank spaces or in the side margins, or something. You can get a resizable selection rectangle, or the standard selection "pins" (watch for the magnifier). It can be a pain, but it can be done. ----------- Factoring in the price tag, I cant offer more than three stars at this time. Some content is suspect/erroneous (see other reviews), although generally content is fairly clear and rather comprehensive. There ARE a lot of phrase examples, which is nice, buton occasion are written in ways Ive never heard anyone speak, American or British, which makes one suspect the quality of all the translations. Maybe this is characteristic of translation dictionaries in general? Some searches yield no results even though the word appears as a subentry, in particular reflexive verb forms. Absolutlely no manual bookmarking capability like some of their other language products. Updates were VERY FEW and VERY FAR between, but lately there have been a couple with minor tweaks. No key or legend to explain dictionary abbreviations, etc., though most can be figured out in context. But WTF is the asterisk * for, found in some entries? The world may never know. Clumsy, slow method of navigating verb tenses (button + popup screen to select). It would be very useful to have arrow buttons and/or swiping to quickly move through tenses without leaving the conjugation screen. The number translation feature is great, though. At this price, this app is a little minimalistic in terms of user interface and functionality. But forget audio pronunciations. Its Spanish, for gosh sakes. There are FAR more important enhancements needed without adding a hundred megabytes. All said and done, sure, its still probably better than a Franklin electronic dictionary.

Pretty Darn Good

But please please please make a favorites or flashcard function for those of us trying to actually learn the language. Would be so easy to do and would be so helpful. Gracias!

Why dont they upgrade this to an iPad version

Its extremely frustrating that the ultralingua translation dictionary 1) has more words 2) costs less 3) is a universal app I feel ripped off. In any case dont by this one which is obviously abandon ware.
